# Evidence and citations

> How sources are authorized, saved as exact revisions and cited by line, physical PDF page or DOCX block.

Status: Available

Advisers' claims lead back to the exact source version behind them. Missing evidence stays visible instead of being smoothed over.

## Sources need your consent

BOARDROOM reads a file only after you authorize that specific file. The recorded example reads only its bundled fictional source.

## Exact revisions

When a source is saved, its original bytes are stored under their SHA-256, and documents also get a separate, content-addressed extraction. A citation points to that saved revision, so editing or deleting the original never rewrites it. Inspection warns when the original has changed or disappeared, and a missing or altered snapshot is refused rather than replaced.

## Where a citation points

| Source | Locator |
| :--- | :--- |
| Text and Markdown | Saved line range, for example `context.md:4-4` |
| PDF | Physical page number |
| DOCX | Saved text block — **not** a Word page number |

Textual PDFs and DOCX text are supported. There is no OCR: empty PDF pages are reported as possibly blank or scanned, and partial or failed extractions keep visible warnings.

Try it with the [document evidence guide](/docs/guides/documents/).
